The European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday called on heads of state and government of 27 members of the European Union (EU) to more cohesion within the EU.
At the EU summit held in Brussels on Thursday, Mr. Van Rompuy also expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which conducted the Union summits with third countries, calling on European leaders to help more, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, and himself, to take action more likely to bring significant added value.
"The real question is how to promote our interests, and this is not a dirty word," said Van Rompuy. "Collectively, we do not invest enough in promoting our interests," he judged.
"We need more consistency and continuity in our work. We simply lack of strategic thinking. Europe boxing in a lower category," he added.
The recent tightening of sanctions against Iran and the European success of the UN resolution on the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia "shows that we make a difference when we are united," said President of the European Council.
Van Rompuy also called for more complementarity between the actions of the Union and what the states on a bilateral basis but also a collective reflection on the European contribution vis-à-vis third countries.
