China, a developing country with severe problems because of its huge population, will succeed in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), said on Thursday UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Ban Ki-moon made the remarks during a joint interview with Chinese media based at UN headquarters before holding a high-level meeting on MDGs.
"You got a great success and achieved a major breakthrough for achieving the MDGs," he said, adding: "I know you also have serious problems because of the very large population. There are still many underdeveloped areas.
"However, as regards the government, you have strong leadership and good governance, you have all these resources," he said, stating further: "I am sure you will succeed and that success should be emulated by Many developing countries.
According to him, China provides a large economic aid to many developing countries, constituting a good example of South-South cooperation.
About 140 heads of State and Government will participate in a high-level meeting at UN headquarters in New York next week during which they will make new commitments.
Ban Ki-moon noted that the MDGs are a program of world leaders to lift billions of people out of poverty, provide quality education to many children, promote the empowerment of women, providing care and support and prevention against HIV / AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, stressing: "This is the promise of world leaders and it must be held.
Ban said he would meet with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in New York and he counted on the participation and full support of the government and the Chinese people to achieve the MDGs.
China actively participates in keeping the peace, "said Secretary General Kofi Annan, adding:" I will discuss with the Chinese Premier on how we can strengthen the role of China and how UN and China can improve their work together.
